Tensegrity Atlas, 2009
Ortelius, Abraham
Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1570

A tensegrity structure displaying a fractured map sourced from Ortelius's 1570 atlas.  Coptic-inspired sewing in an exploded view construction, with rigid pages, cherry boards, and linen thread.  Buckminster Fuller's portmanteau of tensional integrity - "tensegrity" - refers to structures in which the balance of tension and compression of their components creates inherent structural stability.  No rigid elements touch each other - they are held both apart and together by the cords.
